Selma to Montgomery March | Alabama
The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) had been working on registering African American voters in Selma, Alabama since 1963. Fearful that more "outside agitators" would target Selma, State Circuit Judge James Hare issued an injunction barring any gathering of three or more people from meeting in Dallas County to discuss racial issues. As protests and meetings came to a halt, local activists asked the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) for help. In December, 1964, King and the SCLC joined forces with SNCC to launch the Selma Campaign to push for a strong national voting rights law.
