- March 1 King led a procession behind the casket of Jimmie Lee Jackson during a funeral service in Marion, Alabama.
- March 2 Plans confirmed for a march from Selma to Montgomery beginning on March 7 to commemorate the death of Jackson and for African-American voting rights
- March 5 King met with President Johnson at the White House to discuss the Voting Rights Act
- March 7 Voting Rights marchers are beaten at Edmund Pettus Bridge
- March 9 King led second march to bridge. Later that night, Reverend James Reeb, Reverend Olson and Reverend Miller were attacked by white vigilantes.
- March 11 Reverend Reeb dies as a result of beating by white racists. President Johnson later personally telephoned his condolences to Reverend Reeb's widow and meets with Alabama Governor George Wallace, pressuring him to protect the marchers
- March 13 President Johnson denounces the brutality in Alabama
